Product Focus Funnel

Overview

Joe Van Os, PM @ Clariti, created the Product Focus Funnel to help startups/product teams overcome lack of focus and develop a bias for user-centric action.

In this framework, two streams work side by side.

The strategic stream has to do with goal setting, roadmapping, and aligning goals. The tactical stream is involved in analyzing JTBD, mapping relevant user details, and creating a backlog.

In the strategic stream, the team defines a vision and milestones. It also roadmaps how the product will solve the product, clarifying direction and priorities. Finally, it sets goals with methods such as OKRs.

The strategic stream hands off to the tactical stream, who uses the JTBD framework to analyze user needs and pain-points. They then use this to map out a user story to highlight any knowledge gaps and outline the big picture. Finally, they prioritize user stories to create a ranked backlog that treats high ROI items first.
