Goals-Signals-Metrics

Overview

Goals-Signals-Metrics is a simple process for breaking goals down into measurable indicators of success.

Start by outlining long-term qualitative goals. Goals are output-based (vague & feature-dependent) or outcome-based (precise, user-centric). Opt for the latter.

Then, identify signs that will let you know if you're on track to hitting goals or not.

Finally, identify pieces of statistical, goal-relevant data that you will use to validate the signals, and prove success.

The goals-signals-metrics framework can be used in conjunction with Google's HEART framework gives you a robust, high-level picture of UX quality.
