4D Framework

Overview

The 4D Framework expands on Dual-Track Agile Development by layering on four phases crucial to product management success.

1. Discovery
4D Discovery focuses on just breaking down the user problem. Use techniques like the 5 Why’s or JTBD to unveil true user issues. Set concrete success metrics early on to avoid bias later down the line.

2. Design
This phase is used to ideate solutions with varying levels of fidelity, producing wireframes and prototyping to deploy in user tests.

3. Delivery
Prioritize features, construct a backlog, and determine timelines. Febryanto Chang (inventor of 4D) has his team using Scrum to produce deliverables.

4. Deduction
In deducing success, focus on outcomes (user problems) rather than outputs (# of features).

The 4D framework is a cycle that iteratively improves products. The best product managers will use a framework like this, or Dual-Track Agile, to continually identify improvements and optimize products.
